Pelehonuamea, otherwise known as Pele, is the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, fire, and

the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. Pele is known for destroying land over the centuries

and often follows the rebirth of new lands.

Renewal is a piece that describes the cycle of creation and destruction. The recent

eruption of Kīlauea (Dec. 20, 2020) has sparked thoughts of the recent eruption in 2018.

This event destroyed hundreds of acres which included homes, farms, and local

buisnesses. The ʻOhiʻa Lehua plant is the first plant to blossom following volcanic

eruptions. The beauty of the plant’s flower signals the beginning of new life.
